BOUNDARIES
According to the neurotic mechanism of introjections we incorporate patterns, habits, ways of thinking and actions which are not ours. From our early years we internalize feelings and attitudes of the most important people in our lives (parents) to the extent that our behavior can remind others of our parents. We fully adopt their attitudes and beliefs which we reproduce, as we want to be accepted by them.
According to Perls (1969), we all develop by becoming able to distinguish the boundary between ‘me’ and ‘the other’ . And we develop only when we make use of the environmental effects according to our needs, and not adapting them without any processing. Otherwise, we just minimize the differences between our needs and on what we have introjected. We lose the boundaries of the self, depriving ourselves from the opportunity to freely choose what we want; we accept what happens around us without intervening or changing it; we find ourselves in relationships that lead nowhere.
